kate + afton

We had high expectations of awesomeness for Kate and Afton’s wedding at the Chautauqua Institution, and we were certainly not disappointed.  Everything about this day was perfect – the weather, the locations, the people – all of it.  We have adored this couple since we first got to hang out with them in Beantown, so to spend the day with them and their families in such a beautiful place, capturing all of the wonderful moments that unfolded along the way, was a genuine treat for us.  Days like this one, and people like Kate and Afton remind us why we love what we do.  :)

The entire wedding party was staying at the Athenaeum Hotel, so Ben and I got to start out our day in the same place!  I always love it when that happens.  If you’ve never been to this hotel, you should go check it out.  It is an absolute treasure!  We were both so enamored with its beauty and Victorian charm!  Kate and Afton were kind enough to share some of their favorite wedding day memories with us, so we would be able to include them in their blog post.  Thanks so much for sharing, guys!

Afton:  “I loved having our entire wedding at the Chautauqua Institution: with the ceremony and the reception in the same place, guests could stay at the Athenaeum and not have to worry about traveling around. The resulting atmosphere was relaxed and easy-going since the guests could stroll the grounds and visit with one another.”

Ben captured this beautiful moment Kate and her dad shared right before they walked down the aisle.  I absolutely love these, and I’m so glad he was able to document this for them!

Kate:  “Walking down the aisle with my dad was really special – I could see my mom and my sister at the altar, too, and their smiles were all I needed to reassure the jitters I had from standing up in front of the crowd.

Afton:  “The moment of seeing Kate appear at the beginning of the aisle was unlike anything I could have imagined. Everyone tells you it’s going to be a magical moment but no one could have prepared me for how amazing it actually was.”
Kate:  “Finally seeing Afton at the end of the aisle was worth the wait, since we got ready separately and decided not to do group pictures until after the ceremony. When I finally held his hand it was like I could finally let go of the stress of planning and just enjoy being with him.”
Kate:  “Our ceremony was really important to us and I’m so happy with how it went – we had a kind of Goldilocks dilemma where we didn’t want it to be too casual or too formal, and our lovely officiant Jamie helped us to get it just right. She helped us to write our vows, which we’ve kept and will revisit each anniversary.”
Ben was also able to capture this sweet moment between the newly married Kate and Afton after their stroll back down the aisle as husband and wife!  I love these!  Ben never misses a beat – he is so good at his job.  ;)
Status updates!!  ;)
We did all of the formal family photos on the Athenaeum’s gorgeous wrap-around porch during cocktail hour.  I don’t typically blog the family formals, but these two are hysterical.  ;)
Afton:  “I loved the small touches that really added to the timeless atmosphere, like the pink and white striped straws and the rocking chairs on the veranda overlooking the lake.”
Kate:  “Ben and Jenn stole us away for a few night shots – and I can’t thank them enough for it. Those few minutes outside on the beach allowed us to spend a quiet moment together and actually stand still for a bit to soak it all in. We could see the hotel from a distance, abuzz with lights, laughter and music. As cliche as it sounds, it really felt magical, and helped me to make a memory of that day I’ll forever treasure.”

Afton:  “Like Kate, I’m so glad we left the reception for a moment to take pictures with Ben and Jenn – we couldn’t have taken that break from the action ourselves, but they gave us an excuse to step back and have a quiet moment together to appreciate and reflect on the day.”

Kate:  “Our band, the Party Squad, was phenomenal! Our guests loved them – we got so many comments about how great it was to have live music. At one point I requested some polka (they knew just what to do and played “Roll Out the Barrel”) so I could dance with my mom – I had so much fun!”

Afton:  “My best man and I ordered pizza and wings to be delivered right as the band completed their last song. It was perfect timing, and let the party atmosphere continue just a little bit longer.”
Kate and Afton opted to have The Ayres Photo Booth at their wedding, which was CLEARLY a solid investment!  The line to get into the photo booth was out the door all night long!!  ;)
We asked Kate and Afton for a piece of advice to share with our readers, and this is what they gave us:

“We can’t thank Ben and Jenn enough for their sheer energy and sense of adventure. We were so delighted they joined us in Boston for an engagement shoot, and knew right away that they’d be extraordinary in helping us to capture our wedding day.”

Thank you both SO much for sharing from your hearts! You were amazing to work with, and when we say that you two and your wedding day remind us of why we love our job so much, we mean it 100%. Thank you for your patience, your trust, and for being one of the most awesome couples we’ve ever had the privilege to meet! We wish you both all the happiness in the world!! Much love, J + B :)
