There are many different styles of “newborn photography,” but this is the style that I will always prefer. It’s real, it’s in the home which is a very sacred place, and the focus is on the connection of the family as they tread these brand new waters of parenthood. There’s so much beauty in the chaos and uncertainty of life, and in my opinion, it needs to be embraced and celebrated. When you bring a new baby home for the first time, you are so overwhelmed. It never even crosses your mind that you’re living the moments that you’ll soon look back on as “the good old days when you had a newborn.” These crazy times with babies, messy houses, and dark circles under your eyes are actually the best days of your life. I’m mostly talking to/about myself here, lol, but maybe other moms can relate. ;)
A lot of people think that their home isn’t a good backdrop for photos, but as long as you have windows, it’ll be perfect. I promise. Because it’s not about what your house looks like; it’s about remembering the connections you shared during a brand new phase of life. This is the style of photography that we had done when our Elsie was born. We had photos taken of us sitting with her in the nursery that we lovingly designed and created months before we ever met her, and those photos are so incredibly special to us.
It was an absolute honor to be invited into Cathy and Gary’s home to document their new life together as a family of three, and I love that their dog, Pumpkin, was able to jump in for some family photos, too!
Weddings in the Finger Lakes are always so beautiful, and Marissa and Billy’s was no exception! Ventosa Vineyards was a stunning backdrop for this beautiful couple to say I do. I loved taking photos around the vineyard, and I also loved the quick stop we made at the waterfront. It was such a beautiful day!! I’m so happy they found us because they’re the perfect match for us in every way. They love being outside in nature, they’re homebodies who love to travel and explore (same as us!!), and they value relationships with friends and family above all else. It was crystal clear to us that their number one priority on their wedding day was to celebrate their commitment to each other with all of the people they love most in the world, and honestly, when that’s your priority, nothing can prevent you from having the best day ever. :)
Marissa: “For Christmas 2014, Billy bought me a ski trip to Alyeska Resort in Alaska. The 2014-2015 ski season in the the Pacific Northwest brought more rain than snow. With the lack of snow at the resort, we decided to ski on one day and the next day take a road trip through Alaska on a scenic highway. I had looked up a beach to drive to in Seward, Alaska and that’s where we headed. Getting out of the car to stretch and take in the scenery, Billy set up his tripod to capture the beauty of the mountains and water and then suggested we get a picture together. While posing for a picture, Billy reached into his pocket, pulled out a gorgeous ring, and popped the question!“
Marissa: “What we value most in life is the people around us and our families. Most of our friends in Seattle also moved there from far away which has made all of us lean on each other for things you usually look to your family for.“
Marissa: “We enjoy spending time in the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest. Hiking, backpacking, snowboarding, and kayaking keep us busy year round. We also love living in our neighborhood, Ballard, and exploring local breweries and restaurant happy hours.“
Marissa: “For our first date, Billy invited me over to his apartment to make homemade pizza! Making pizza together is now one of our favorite date night activities. However, we do also enjoy celebrating birthdays, promotions, and other milestones by getting dressed up and making reservations for a dark and quite local place to to eat.“
Marissa: “What makes us want to spend the rest of our lives together is that we just get each other! It’s so easy to find comfort in each other when we enjoy the same activities, eating the same food, creating hobbies together, and exploring the world.“
Marissa: “Sitting at our sweetheart table for dinner was the first quite time we had together all day.“
Billy: “One of my favorite memories was hearing my best man retell stories of me and Marissa.“
Marissa: “I loved stepping away during our reception to catch the sunset near the gorgeous oak tree and lake.”
Marissa: “I loved dancing the Kalamatiano, traditional Greek wedding dance, where everyone joined in whether they knew the steps or not.“
Billy: “I loved seeing all of our families and friends in one place and watching all of our dancing friends partying on the dance floor.“
